Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Taking care of your new tattoo is essential to ensure proper healing, prevent infections, and maintain the quality of the design. Follow these steps carefully:
Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours):
Leave the bandage on:
Your artist will apply a protective bandage after the session. Keep it on for 2-4 hours to protect the area from bacteria.
Wash the tattoo gently:
After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap. Avoid scrubbing the area—use your hand to clean it gently.
Pat dry:
Use a clean paper towel to pat the area dry. Avoid rubbing it with a regular towel to prevent irritation.
Apply a thin layer of ointment:
Use a tattoo-specific ointment or fragrance-free moisturizer, such as Aquaphor or Bepanthen. Avoid using too much—it should feel slightly moist, not greasy.
Ongoing Care (Days 3-14):
Wash twice a day:
Clean the tattoo morning and night with mild soap and water.
Moisturize regularly:
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or tattoo ointment 2-3 times daily to keep the skin hydrated and prevent scabbing.
Avoid scratching or picking:
As your tattoo heals, it may itch or form light scabs. Do not scratch, pick, or peel the scabs, as this can lead to scarring or ink loss.
Things to Avoid During Healing:
Direct Sunlight:
Avoid exposing the tattoo to sunlight or tanning beds. After healing, use sunscreen (SPF 30+) to protect the tattoo’s color.
Swimming and Soaking:
Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas, or baths for at least 2-3 weeks. Stick to quick showers instead.
Tight Clothing:
Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent friction and irritation on the tattooed area.
Signs of Proper Healing:
Peeling or flaking: This is normal and part of the healing process.
Mild redness or itching: This is expected in the first few days.
When to Contact a Doctor or Artist:
Severe redness, swelling, or discharge: These could be signs of an infection.
Allergic reactions: If you notice a rash, bumps, or extreme itching, contact your artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
Long-Term Care:
Sunscreen: Always protect your tattoo from the sun with SPF 30+ to maintain color vibrancy.
Moisturize: Keep the area moisturized even after it heals to prevent the tattoo from fading.
Following these steps will ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and stays vibrant over time. If you have any concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to contact your tattoo artist for advice.
